In September 1864, a catastrophic explosion took place at Alfred Nobel’s laboratory at Heleneborg in Stockholm, where his younger brother Emil and five others lost their lives. The explosion was caused by the handling of the unstable explosive nitroglycerin.
The City Archive hold traces of this tragic accident. What happened next? And how did the event influence Alfred Nobel’s work, which eventually led to the invention of a safer explosive – dynamite?
