What comes to mind when you hear the word “economics”? Money, banks, maybe savings and stocks? Economics is about much more than that. For example, economic researchers study human behaviour, the environment, health, psychology and community building.
Last year, research that provided new insights into why there are large differences in wealth between countries was awarded. What is this year’s prize about? Listen as members of the Prize Committee in Economic Sciences explain and discuss the award during an evening at the Riksbank.
Participants include Aino Bunge, Deputy Governor of the Riksbank, along with representatives from the Prize Committee in Economic Sciences. The conversation is moderated by Olof Somell from the Nobel Prize Museum. The programme is arranged by The Riksbank, in collaboration with the Nobel Prize Museum, as part of Nobel Calling Stockholm.
Sveriges Riksbank’s Prize in Economic Sciences was established in connection with the Riksbank’s 300th anniversary in 1968. The prize is awarded every year to a person or persons in the field of economic sciences who have produced work of outstanding importance.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences appoints the laureate(s) according to the same principles as for the Nobel Prizes. The laureates are announced every year in mid-October. The prize amount is also the same as for the Nobel Prizes, 11 million, and is paid by the Riksbank.
