Churchill - Måleri och författarskap

Winston Churchill was not only the legendary prime minister of the United Kingdom during World War II but also a Nobel Laureate in literature. During the latter half of his life he also dedicated a significant amount of time to amateur painting. He described painting to be his favourite pastime: “There is no field, in which I feel more humble and at the same time natural”.

Thirty-odd landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes provides a partly depiction of Churchill. In the exhibition is also shown a numer of manusscipts in different stages of adaptation, which gives a glimpse of the creative process of the writer. That painting had a special importance for Churchill himself can be seen from the following emphatic advice to those in risk of being idle:

If you need something to do on free moments, something to divert your thoughts from the mundane, something to light up your vacation, do not believe that you cannot here find what you desire. It would be a great shame, if you idly spent your time with golf and bridge, dwindling it away or indecisevly just wondered what in the world you were going to do”

Winston Churchill
