Alma de Artista is an artwork inspired by the life of the poet and human rights advocate Gabriela Mistral, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 1945. The prize motivation reads “for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world.”
On Mistral’s grave in Montegrande it says: “What the soul is to the body, so is the artist to his people.” This quote served as the starting point for Alma de Artista. The artwork sheds light on the role of artists as voices for justice, storytelling, catharsis and truth.
Through collaboration with youths from the local hub Tensta Tech, the poet Nawroz Zakholy’s writing group at Tensta konsthall and the association Låt konsten tala, poetry will be intertwined with the words and graphic language of the poet and artist Nachla Libre.
