The artist Alexander Wolfe is inspired by the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine which was awarded to Ardem Patapoutian and David Julius for “their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”
Kinesthesia, also referred to as proprioception, is your body’s ability to sense movement, action, and location. It is present in every muscle movement you have. When the audience member touches the artwork, sensors communicate that touch and transform it in the form of light.
The artwork can in this way sense the audience and react to the physical signals they are sending, creating its own kinesthesia.
