Led by Nobel Week Lights, BioCanvas is a collaboration between 5th grade students from Husbygårdsskolan, Karolinska Institutet and the Nobel Prize Museum. Through a series of workshops, the children have created an artwork inspired by bacteria and other single-celled organisms.

The students cultivated bacteria at the Karolinska Institute and made artistic representations inspired by their sessions in the lab. With the help of photographer Benoît Derrier and designer Daniel Tiderman, the walls of Kulturhuset, in the very city center, are transformed by projections of the children’s art.

During the artistic process, the students have explored Nobel Prize laureate Alexander Fleming’s work. Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases.
