Cast Away

Mynttorget | Free admission

In Cast Away, the impact of marine plastic waste and discarded fishing gear is given new meaning. The shadows revealed through the discarded materials, collected through the Sotenäs Marine Recycling Center in Sweden, make two images emerge: a child helping a bird entangled in fishing gear, and two people collecting litter along the shoreline.

By transforming this waste into a sculpture, the artist highlights questions of the ocean’s vulnerability, human responsibility, and our shared future. The materials of sculptural light installation show the dangerous impacts of human activity on marine life and our shared ecosystems.

Cast Away evokes the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore, for increasing knowledge about human-induced climate change and laying the foundations for action. Through the remnants washed ashore from the sea and the interplay of light and shadow, Cast Away reminds us of how human actions affect the environments we share, and of our responsibility to care for them.

Nobel Prize Facts

The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was shared between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change”.

Visual artist Anni Laukka explore the delicate threshold between light and shadow in her works. Her practice engages with social and environmental issues through materials that carry stories and traces of the past.

In recent years, she has worked with toys salvaged from bombed Ukrainian homes, plastic waste collected from Japanese shores and discarded fishing gear recovered from the sea.

Transforming these materials into sculptural forms, Laukka uses light to reveal experiences and perspectives, inviting reflection on vulnerability, loss and our relationship with the world around us.
