The artwork The Door is inspired by a poem written by Nobel Prize laureate Tomas Tranströmer. The poem says:
”Each man is a half-open door
Tomas Tranströmer
leading to a room for everyone.”
A red door. Light shines through the gap – is someone on the other side? Behind the door, another place emerges where someone else have opened an identical door. When both doors are open, a shared space is formed. What happens next is determined by those who participate. A meeting may occur and, in line with Tranströmer’s poetry, a room for everyone is created.
The artwork The Door by Helsingborgs stad is located on Norrbro, in front of the Parliament House, and in Tenstagången. When the doors are opened, visitors see one another and become part of the same artwork.
Tomas Tranströmer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2011 “for his condensed, luminous images that give us fresh access to reality.”

Helsingborgs stad
Alexandra Institute (Denmark) and Luxera AB developed The Door Between Two Worlds in 2018, commissioned by the City of Helsingborg.
The vision behind the artwork was to create interaction between people in different locations, both physically and digitally, and to build bridges.
During Helsingborg’s light festival Drömljus in February 2026, The Door will be exhibited once again.
